These qualifications provide the essential knowledge and skills needed to enable those new to the fire and rescue services to work safely and effectively and to progress in their career. They form part of the induction into the fire service, and the fire service apprenticeship.

The NVQ Diploma is competency-based (ie mainly practical) and the Diploma is knowledge-based.
New recruits to the fire and rescue services, including fire apprentices.
Available to deliver in the following:
  • England
  • Wales
  • Scotland
  • Northern Ireland

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You'll cover things like:    
  • Responding to emergency situations
  • Rescuing life and property from all types of incidents
  • Minimising the risks of fire and other hazards. 

You will learn in the classroom and/or on the job in the work environment.

The Diplomas are assessed by a range of methods including: coursework, e-assessment, oral examination, portfolio of evidence, practical demonstration/assignment, practical examination, task-based controlled assessment and written examination, depending on whether they are knowledge- or competency-based.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Successful completion of the qualification can lead to a job as a fire-fighter.

Learners can also choose to go on to take the  City & Guilds Justice and Security qualifications, or the ILM Leadership and Management qualifications.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.
