These qualifications have been developed for anyone working, or hoping to work, in a pet shop.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge you have developed, such as:

  • Identification and biological details of pet animal species
  • Sources of supply and selling techniques, equipment and accessories required for the wellbeing of different species
  • Classes of animals, their wellbeing and health checks, health and hygiene routines, nutritional requirements, preventative treatments and stocking densities
  • Common diseases and parasites and their treatments
  • Legislation that relates to pet store management
  • Employment and training of staff, health and safety issues, customer relations, licensing and financial systems, design, layout, and stock control.

You will learn in a suitably equipped college or by distance learning and complete assignments for assessment.

Level 3
You are working, or hoping to work, within a pet store and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard.

Learners can also choose to go on to take the following related qualification:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Centre-based Certificate, Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma and Extended Diploma in Animal Management (0074).
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Level 3

Level 3 will suit you if you are working within a pet store and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard.
There are two qualifications available at this level:
  • Level 3 Award in the Principles of Animal Management within a Pet Store
  • Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Animal Management within a Pet Store.
There are two units - candidates complete one unit to achieve the award and both units for the certificate:
  • Principles of animal management within a pet store
  • Principles of pet store management systems and procedures.
