Get qualified to work in commercial pesticide application with the Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides. This qualification meets the legal requirements of the Control of Pesticides Regulations and lets you to work unsupervised in the industry. To achieve this qualification you'll show your knowledge of the Approved Code of Practice for Plant Protection Products. You'll also have the opportunity to demonstrate your practical skills in a particular pesticide application equipment or technique.
The Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides is for anyone who works in or wants to work in commercial pesticide application.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You'll cover things like:

  • code of practice
  • for plant protection products
  • personal protective equipment
  • interpreting product information
  • mixing the correct quantity of pesticide
  • safe application
  • weather conditions.

For this Award, you need to show you've got a strong set of pesticide application skills and knowledge. You'll demonstrate your knowledge of the approved code of practice for plant protection products through an online, multiple-choice test.

You'll then show your practical skills through a demonstration. Your assessor will check that you have the background knowledge and understanding you need for your job through oral questioning.

Level 2
You have some knowledge and basic skills in pesticide application. You want to get recognition for your skills, likely to meet the legal requirements of the Control of Pesticides Regulations. You may also be looking to get continuing professional development (CPD) points towards NRoSO membership or to meet Farm Assurance Scheme criteria.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Achieving this qualification can help you work in roles such as:

  • Countryside ranger/Warden
  • Countryside/Conservation officer
  • Farm manager
  • Farm worker (crops)
  • Greenkeeper
  • Groundsperson
  • Landscaper.

Once you have achieved this qualification, you can continue taking optional units to receive qualifications in a wider range of pesticide-application machinery.

You may also be interested in the Level 3 qualification run in conjunction with BASIS which is intended for operators of pesticide application equipment who progress into higher-level positions.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver the Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides you'll need qualified assessors.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

For the core unit learners will be assessed using an online exam. For the optional unit, you'll assess learners through a practical demonstration and oral questioning.

Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.

 

Level 2

This level is ideal if you want to get recognition for your skills, likely to meet the legal requirements of the Control of Pesticides Regulations. You may also be looking to get continuing professional development (CPD) points towards NRoSO membership or to meet Farm Assurance

You complete one core unit and one optional unit at Level 2. You can choose from options including:

  • principles of safe pesticide application
  • hand held pesticide applicators
  • pesticide application by fogging, misting and smokes.
