The qualification will provide accredited professional development opportunities for those currently and newly working in these areas and encourage progression in the sector. You will cover the key knowledge, understanding and skills required for providing careers information, advice and guidance in a professional or voluntary role.
The qualifications have been developed for those working in the new Adult Advancement and Career Service, as well as other agencies, and in the voluntary sector. You must be aged 16+ to register on the Level 3 Diploma and be aged 18+ to register for the Level 4 Diploma.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed such as:

  • Using diagnostic and assessment tools
  • Obtaining and organising career-related information
  • Delivering information in an outreach setting
  • Promoting career-related learning
  • Working with specific groups
  • Providing on-going support
  • Working with other organisations.

You will learn on the job in the work environment.

Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include a portfolio of evidence and direct observation.

Which level is right for me?

Level 3
Your role involves providing career guidance directly to clients, reporting to line management as well as associated services. You may also supervise and support other staff members.

Level 4
Your role involves providing specialist career guidance to clients, reporting to senior management and networking with associated services and managing, negotiating, training, evaluating and developing the service provision.

Level 6
Your role involves providing expert career guidance to clients, networking with associated services and managing, negotiating, training, evaluating and developing the service provision.

 

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress in a wide range of career guidance roles including:

  • Careers adviser
  • Business link adviser
  • Advice provider within an educational institution
  • Counselling provider
  • Training and human resources personnel.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Level 3

This level will suit you if your role involves providing career guidance directly to clients, reporting to line management as well as associated services. You may also supervise and support other staff members.

The Level 3 Award for Supporting Clients to Overcome Barriers in Learning and Work comprises four units:

  • Deliver career-related learning in groups
  • Provide information to support clients to overcome barriers to learning and work
  • Signpost clients to sources of information, advice and guidance to overcome barriers to learning and work
  • Support clients to apply for learning and work.

The Level 4 Diploma in Career Information and Advice comprises mandatory and optional units, including:

  • Interview clients to determine their need for career information, advice and guidance
  • Refer clients to sources of specialist support to meet their needs
  • Understand how to support specific client groups to overcome barriers to learning, training and work
  • Source, evaluate and use Labour Market Information with clients.

This level is ideal if your role involves providing expert career guidance to clients, networking with associated services and managing, negotiating, training, evaluating and developing the service provision.

The Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development comprises mandatory and optional units, including:
  • Explore and agree the career guidance and development needs of clients
  • Career guidance theory
  • Use diagnostic and assessment tools with clients
  • Work with other agencies for the benefit of clients and the organisation.

We have also developed a shorter, mini qualification, titled Certificate in Professional Development for Careers Guidance Professionals. This qualification consists of three units:

  • Career guidance theory
  • Reflect on and improve professional practice
  • Use career and labour marketinformation with clients
