These qualifications have been developed for those working, or looking to work, in an associate teaching role in the Further Education (FE) sector in England.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You will cover a range of essential skills and knowledge, such as:

  • Delivering lifelong learning 
  • Assessing in lifelong learning 
  • Assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding 
  • Identifying the learning needs of individuals 
  • Using resources for lifelong learning 
  • Developing and preparing learning and development resources
  • Internally assuring the quality of assessment.

You will learn in a teaching and learning environment. Assessment will be through assignments and a portfolio of evidence.
The qualification usually takes between one and two years to complete.

Which level is right for me?
Level 3

The Level 3 certificate has been developed to meet a requirement of the Further Education Teachers' Qualifications (England) Regulations 2007 and related contractual requirements introduced by the funding agency at the same time. It is the required qualification for those teaching in an associate teaching role. This level is ideal for those embarking on, or new to, a teaching career.

Level 4
The Level 4 certificate has been developed to meet a requirement of the Further Education Teachers' Qualifications (England) Regulations 2007 and related contractual requirements introduced by the funding agency at the same time. It is the required qualification for those teaching in an associate teaching role. This level is appropriate for more experienced teachers.

The Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector will help you to progress in your career as:

  • Associate teacher in further, adult and community education
  • Associate teacher in work-based learning
  • Technician or member of support staff in further and adult education.

To officially gain your ATLS status, the next step after taking this qualification is to go through the process of professional formation with the Institute for Learning (IfL).

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver this qualification you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially. To find all the requirements for assessment and delivery, download the qualification handbook.
In order to get approval to offer this qualification, first become a City & Guilds centre - then you can apply for qualification approval.

Centres currently offering the City & Guilds Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (7304) have automatic approval to offer these qualifications. For all other City & Guilds centres, please download and complete the qualification approval form and send it to your local City & Guilds office.

Eligibility requirements:
Candidates should be at least 19 years of age. You will undertake an initial assessment in mathematics and ICT. If you do not achieve the appropriate level, then your development needs will be assessed and you will agree an action plan to address them. If you join the qualification programme having already completed a PTLLS award, your record of development needs and previous action to address them should be reviewed.  This qualification replaces City & Guilds' Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (7304).

Level 3

Developed to meet a requirement of the Further Education Teachers' Qualifications (England) Regulations 2007 and related contractual requirements. Ideal for those embarking on, or new to, a teaching career.

This comprises mandatory and optional units, including:
  • Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
  • Facilitate learning and development for individuals
  • Roles, responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning
  • Coaching and mentoring roles
  • Equality and diversity.
