Last Updated: 05 Sep 2014 The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector qualifies you for Qualified Teacher, Learning & Skills (QTLS) status. You can qualify for Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, but if you already have QTLS status you can do a shorter subsidiary diploma to become a qualified specialist teacher.The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is for anyone working as or planning to become a full teacher in further, adult or continuing education. You should have Level 3 skills in the subject you intend to teach, though a qualification is optional. You'll need access to 150 hours of teaching practice in a recognised lifelong learning location to earn a diploma, and 75 hours for the subsidiary diploma. Available in the following:

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

While completing these qualifications, you'll cover things like:

  • Teaching theory and practice
  • Principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation
  • Confidence, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Professional role and responsibilities.

To get a diploma, you learn with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. You will demonstrate what you've learned through both practical skills assessments and assignments that cover the theory of teaching.

Assessments include practical skills demonstrations and written examinations. You will also keep a teaching practice portfolio and a reflective learning journal. You will also complete 150 practice teaching hours.

Is ideal if you work or want to work as a full teacher within the lifelong learning sector. You may want to become officially qualified by achieving Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector qualifications could help you progress into roles including:

  • Full teacher in further, adult and community education, for example, as a further education lecturer
  • Full teacher in work-based learning

These diplomas qualify you for Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. To gain full QTLS status, the next step after taking this qualification is to go through the process of professional formation with the Institute for Learning (IfL).

Once you've achieved QTLS status, you can meet your continuing professional development (CPD) requirement through an Award in Developing Embedded Approaches to Literacy, Language and Numeracy.

If you decide you would like to specialise in teaching Mathematics, ESOL or English after taking this qualification, you could progress on to an additional diploma:

  • Additional Diploma in Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Additional Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

 

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these courses, you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. This includes ensuring that candidates are able to access appropriate facilities to allow them to complete research assignments.

You will also need qualified internal assessors. You will assess learners through a combination of a portfolio of evidence, practical skills demonstrations, and written examinations.  All learners should be qualified to Level 3 or be able to demonstrate Level 3 skills in the subject they intend to teach, plus have reasonable levels of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT skills.

Learners must also have access to 150 hours of teaching practice in a recognised lifelong learning location. You must make sure they can access all the resources they need to complete the qualification.

Level 5

This level will suit you if you work or want to work as a full teacher within the lifelong learning sector. You want to become officially qualified by achieving Qualified Teacher, Learning & Skills (QTLS) status.

There are seven core units:

  • Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector
  • Planning and enabling learning
  • Enabling learning and assessment
  • Theories and principles for planning and enabling learning
  • Continuing personal and professional development
  • Curriculum development for inclusive practice
  • Wider professional practice.

Optional units include:

  • Developing and managing resources in the lifelong learning sector (15 credits)
  • The lifelong learning sector (15 credits)
  • Integrating literacy, language and numeracy in the learning of vocational and other subjects (6 credits)
  • Developing management skills (15 credits).
