Road Passenger Vehicle Driving Skills (7439)

This qualification has been developed to enable learners to demonstrate their skills within three areas of passenger transportation: Community Transport, Taxi or Private Hire Vehicles (PHV).
The qualifications are for learners aged 16 or over (or 21 or over for qualifications in driving a Hackney carriage) who are working, or wishing to work, as taxi, private hire or community transport drivers.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed such as

  • ensuring passengers' health and safety
  • driving in a professional manner
  • providing a service to customers in a wheelchair
  • processing fares and charges.

You will learn on the job in the work environment.

Assessment of a portfolio of evidence may include a number of different methods including observation by an assessor whilst carrying out the job, documentary evidence, witness testimonies from people working in the industry, case studies authenticated by an assessor and professional discussion.

You are working, or wishing to work as a passenger driver and have some relevant knowledge and skills.

These qualifications can help you to progress in a wide range of driving roles including:

  • Bus/Coach driver
  • Taxi driver
  • Transport planner
  • Transport scheduler
  • Chauffeur.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres can gain automatic approval if they currently offer:

  • NVQ in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving (7339).

There are no eligibility requirements. However, whilst the qualification is approved for those of 16 years and upwards, in reality, some occupations e.g. Hackney Carriage are unavailable to anyone under 21.

Level 2

This level will suit you if you are working, or wishing to work, as a passenger driver and have some relevant knowledge and skills.

This qualification comprises seven shared mandatory units as well as three pathways covering Community Transport and Taxi or Private Hire Vehicles (PHV). These include:

  • Provide professional customer service in the taxi and private hire industries
  • Provide a transport service in the taxi and private hire vehicle industries for customers who require assistance
  • Carry fare-paying passengers within the regulatory framework of the taxi industry
  • Plan routes in the taxi and private hire industries.
