These provide learners with the essential skills in how to use Computer Aided Design software.   You will learn how an object is designed in either 2D  or 3D and how objects can be manufactured.
The Awards/Certificates in Computer Aided Design and Manufacture are for people who work, or want to work, in manufacturing or engineering design and need complex skills in 2D/3D design and computer-aided manufacture.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You'll cover things like:

  • principles of the 2D/3D drawing environment, in terms of hardware, software and physical surroundings
  • the typical composition of a CAD system
  • the production of a component using computer aided manufacturing techniques
  • health and safety procedures.

For the Awards/Certificate in Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing you will learn in a group with your training provider. You'll develop your skills in practical sessions and learn some of the theory behind computer aided design. You will be assessed through practical demonstrations, assignments and a multiple choice test.

Which level is right for me?

Level 1
You are looking to work, or are just starting out, in the field of manufacturing or engineering design and need to gain skills in CAD.
Level 2
You have some experience in computing, perhaps in manufacturing or engineering design, and want to increase your knowledge and skills and progress in your career.

Level 3
You've a background in computing and design and may have worked in manufacturing or engineering design for some time. You want to develop specialist 2D or 3D design skills to help you move on in your career and take on greater responsibility.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

You can get fast-track approval if you offer Level 3 Certificate in 2D CAD (4353-02) or Level 3 Certificate in 3D CAD (4353-03).

Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it. A solid background in computing and design is also required.

Level 1

Level 1 is ideal if you are looking to work, or are just starting out, in the field of manufacturing or engineering design and need to gain skills in CAD. 

There is one qualification available at this Level. The single unit includes:

  • Use associated IT, CAD hardware and operating systems
  • Use the range of commands to create and constrain sketches
  • Use the range of commands to produce extruded and revolved features.

Level 2

Level 2 is ideal if you have some experience in computing, perhaps in manufacturing or engineering design, and want to increase your knowledge and skills and progress in your career.

There are four qualifications available at this level. Depending on the qualification you choose, you complete two, four or six mandatory units. Units include:

  • 2D Computer aided design
  • 2D Computer aided part programming
  • 2D Manual part programming
  • 2D CNC machining
  • Reinstate the work area(s)
  • 2D CAD online test.

Level 3

Level 3 is ideal if you've a background in computing and design and you may have worked in manufacturing or engineering design for some time. You want to develop specialist 2D/3D design skills to help you move on in your career.

There are seven qualifications available at this level. Depending on the qualification you choose, you will complete between two and six mandatory units. Units include:

  • 3D Computer aided part programming
  • 3D CNC machining
  • Use advanced features and parts modelling
  • Use advanced presentation graphics.
