If you're new to engineering, you'll develop the skills for a technician job in a range of settings. If you're more experienced you'll develop your understanding of technical and design principles in a specialist field of engineering.

You can take the qualifications in the UK or outside, and use them to work in a wide range of countries.

An IVQ Technician Qualification in Engineering is for anyone interested in developing an engineering career. There are options for school leavers and new entrants, experienced technicians, supervisors and first level managers.

Which level is right for me?
Level 2
You're new to the engineering industry, and want the skills to work as a technician in mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering. You might also be working as a technician and want to increase your understanding and gain a recognised qualification.

Level 3
You've worked in the engineering industry for some time - you have plenty of experience, and your work might involve supervising others. You want to develop your skills further, perhaps to move into a senior technician role in a specialist area.

Level 5
You're either working or preparing to work as a senior or chief technician with a high level of responsibility. You want to develop your specialist skills and critical judgement.

The Technician Qualification in Engineering could help you get work in computer aided draughting, mechanical technology or electrical and electronic applications. Jobs may include design/electrical engineer and plant operator.

After taking a level of this qualification you could move on to a higher level qualification, including:

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

For the Qualification in Engineering you'll typically assess learners through practical demonstrations and assignments, and a multiple choice or written test.

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards including appropriate vehicles.

Level 2

The Level 2 IVQ Technician Certificate in Engineering will suit you if you're new to the engineering industry, and want the skills to work as a technician in mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering. You might also be working as a technician and want to increase your understanding and gain a recognised qualification.

You complete two core units:

  • Engineering fundamentals (1)
  • Engineering fundamental (1) practical assignments.

You also choose one specialist pathway from:

  • Mechanical
  • Mechanical, electrical and electronic 
  • Electrical and electronic.

You complete between two and four additional units depending on the pathway you choose.
