The Award in Mail Services Principles focuses on the mailing/courier process, dealing with parcels and letters in a consumer and business environment. This qualification also forms the knowledge element of the Mail Services Apprenticeship Framework.
The Award in Mail Services Principles is for anyone that already works or wants to work within the mailing/courier process in a business and individual environment. This includes Royal Mail employees, specialist mail service providers such as courier companies and organisations that rely on an efficient and effective internal post system e.g. the health service.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You'll cover things like:

  • Working effectively with colleagues and customers
  • Health, safety and security
  • Mail collection processes (optional)
  • Mail processing (optional)
  • Understanding the mail delivery process.

You will be taught on-the-job in the workplace and taught units will take place in a classroom environment.

Assessment is via a short answer questions papers.

You work in mail services, dealing with collection, delivery, and processing of mail. You want to increase your specialist skills and take on more responsibility.

  • Collection and distribution van driver.

  • Level 2 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Mail Services (6814)
  • Level 2 Warehousing and Storage Skills (1016)
  • ILM Level 3 Supervisory and Management qualifications
  • Level 3 Logistics Operations Management qualifications (3292).

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

Staff delivering this qualification must be able to demonstrate that they are:

  • Technically competent in the areas for which they are delivering training and/or have experience of providing training. This knowledge must be at least to the same level as the training being delivered.
  • Have recent relevant experience in the specific area they will be assessing.
  • Have credible experience of providing training.

Delivery of the qualification will take place on-the-job and taught units will be in a classroom environment.

Assessment is via externally set short answer question papers provided by City & Guilds. 

Centres already approved to offer the Level 2 NVQ in Mail Services (1004-02) and/or Level 2 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Mail Services (6814-02) may apply for fast track approval. Download the form for fast-track approval from the centre documents section.

Level 2

This level is ideal for learners who work or want to work as mail service operatives, post workers, mail sorters or couriers in the mail services sector.  A Level 2 Award in Mail Services Principles will allow candidates to develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the mail services sector.

To earn this qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units, including:
  • Understand how to Work Effectively with Colleagues and Customers in Mail Services
  • Understand Health, Safety and Security in Mail Services
  • Understand how to Process Mail.
