These qualifications are primarily designed for those working as or wanting to work as fitness instructors or personal trainers in the exercise and fitness industry.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Depending upon the level you choose, you will be able to develop specialist and competency skills in a chosen area such as:

•Gym-based exercise
•Exercise to music
•Water-based exercise
•Exercise for children
•Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
•Principles of exercise, fitness and health
•Designing and managing personal training programmes with clients
•Applying the principle of nutrition to support clients' goals.

Key topics within this qualification include exercise and health.

To achieve this qualification you will need to show that you have got a particular set of skills. You will work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work or by studying.

This qualification is assessed by online multiple choice tests, short answer tests and practical assignments.

Which Level is right for me?

Level 2
You already work as or want to work as a fitness instructor. You have basic knowledge on exercise and health.

Level 3
You already work as or want to work as a fitness instructor. You have some knowledge and skills in the area and may have achieved a basic qualification.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

On completion of this qualification, you will normally go into employment into roles such as:

•Personal trainer
•Fitness instructor.
However, you can also progress on to the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (4926-02) or the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training (4926-03).

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.
You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.
The qualifications are assessed via a combination of online multiple-choice tests and learners producing a portfolio of evidence.

There are no eligibility requirements for this qualification.

Level 2

Level 2 is ideal if you already work as or want to work as a fitness instructor. You have basic knowledge on exercise and health.

You'll need to complete five mandatory units:

•Anatomy and physiology for exercise
•Principles of exercise, fitness and health
•Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation
•Work with clients to help them adhere to exercise and physical activity
•Reflect on and develop own practice in providing exercise and physical activity.

You'll also need to choose one specialist pathway from:

•Gym-based exercise
•Exercise to music
•Water-based exercise
•Exercise and physical activity for children.

Within your chosen pathway, you'll need to complete two more units - one on planning exercise sessions and one on instructing exercise sessions.

You'll need to complete nine mandatory units from a range, including:

•Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
•Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation
•Apply the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme.
They may also choose an additional unit:

•Plan, market and sell services.
