Exercise referral is an important part of the health and fitness industry. Every year many thousands of patients are referred by medical professionals to undertake a programme of exercise.  Exercise referral is at the heart of increasing the links between the fitness industry and the health sector.

The City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral is designed in order for exercise referral to grow in the UK and to increase the respect for the role of the fitness professional in the prevention and treatment of medical conditions. Demand comes via the need for exercise referral instructors to be appropriately qualified and to hold the correct skills and knowledge to work in exercise referral.
The qualification is aimed at Exercise and fitness professionals looking to be appropriately qualified and to hold the correct skills and knowledge to work in exercise referral. Learners are interested and wish to take an active role in the prevention and treatment of medical conditions.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

The qualification consists of six mandatory units; allowing you to develop specialist competency skills and gain knowledge in the area of:

  • Planning exercise referral programmes with patients
  • Understanding medical conditions for exercise referral
  • Professional practice for exercise referral instructors
  • Instructing exercise with referred patients
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
  • Applying the principles of nutrition as part of a personal training programme

 

To achieve this qualification you will need to show that you have got a particular set of skills. You will work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work or by studying.

Prerequisites required include level 2 Exercise and Fitness qualifications (Gym, ETM, Aqua)

This qualification is assessed by online multiple choice tests, assignments, short answer tests and learners compiling a portfolio of evidence.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

On completion of this qualification, you will normally go into employment into roles such as:

  • Exercise Referral trainer
  • Personal trainer
  • Fitness instructor.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment. The qualification will only be delivered in disciplines where tutors have the appropriate discipline specific competence and qualifications.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

The qualifications are assessed via a combination of online multiple-choice tests, assignments and learners producing a portfolio of evidence.

Level 3

The Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral is ideal if you already work as or want to work as a fitness instructor. You have some knowledge and skills in the area and have also achieved (as a minimum requirement) the level 2 Exercise and Fitness qualification.

You'll need to complete the six mandatory units:

  • Professional practice for exercise referral instructors
  • Instructing exercise with referred patients
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
  • Applying the principles of nutrition as part of a personal training programme
