Develop the skills to work as a fitness instructor or personal trainer with a Certificate in Fitness Instructing or Personal Training - and qualify for the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS).

You'll cover key topics in exercise and health, and also develop specialist skills in the type of work you plan to do - personal training, gym-based exercise, exercise to music, water-based exercise or exercise for children.
These qualifications are for anyone who is 16 or older and interested in becoming a fitness instructor or personal trainer. You don't need any previous experience, and you don't need to be working in the sport and recreation sector already.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You'll cover things like:

  • the basic principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • anatomy and physiology
  • client support
  • health, safety and welfare.

For these qualifications you learn in a group environment with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions or assignments. You are assessed using a combination of assignments, practical demonstrations and multiple-choice exams.

Which Level is right for me?

Level 2

You're interested in pursuing a career in sport and recreation. You'd like to develop your skills in planning and leading fitness sessions so you can work in a role where you teach gym-based exercise, exercise to music, water-based exercise or exercise for children.

Level 3
You're interested in working as a personal trainer in the sport and recreation industry and need to develop the skills to do so.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Achieving these qualifications can help you work as a health and fitness instructor or personal trainer. They also qualify you to join the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS).

Taking these qualifications can help you build up the knowledge you need to move on to an NVQ. They provide underlying knowledge for the Level 2 NVQ in Instructing Exercise and Fitness and Level 3 NVQ in Personal Training.

If you're taking an Exercise and Fitness Apprenticeship, these qualifications can act as your technical certificate.

They also act as Additional and Specialist Learning (ASL) for the 14-19 Diploma.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

You assess learners using a combination of assignments, practical demonstrations, a portfolio of evidence and multiple-choice exams.

Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.

Level 2

Level 2 is ideal if you'd like to develop your skills in planning and leading fitness sessions so you can work in a role where you teach gym-based exercise, exercise to music, water-based exercise or exercise for children.

You complete four core units:

  • anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • principles of exercise, fitness and health.

You also choose one specialist pathway from:

  • gym-based exercise
  • exercise to music
  • water-based exercise
  • exercise and physical activity for children.

Within your chosen pathway, you complete two more units:

  • planning exercise sessions
  • instructing exercise sessions.
