These qualifications cover essential coaching knowledge that can be used across any sport. You'll learn how to plan, conduct and evaluate coaching activities. There are levels for those who are just starting out, as well as options for more experienced coaches.

The Awards in the Principles of Coaching Sport are for anyone looking to start or advance in a coaching career. You don't need any prior qualifications.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Depending on which qualification you take, you’ll cover things like:
  • Understanding the fundamentals of coaching sport
  • Understanding the principles of planning coaching activities in sport
  • Understanding the principles of conducting coaching activities in sport
  • Understanding the principles of evaluating coaching activities in sport.
For these qualifications you'll learn in a group environment with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. You'll be assessed using assignments and practical demonstrations.

Which level is right for me?

Level 1
Level 1 is an introduction to coaching. You want to develop your knowledge so you can work as an assistant coach.

Level 2
You have some experience coaching a particular sport and are looking to develop your knowledge further, to progress from assistant coach to coach.

After completing this qualification, you may want to advance onto:

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver the Awards in the Principles of Coaching Sport, you need to provide learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources needed to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification in order to achieve industry standards.

You will also need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially. You'll assess learners using practical demonstrations and assignments which will be externally set, internally assessed and externally verified.

Level 1

Level 1 is an introduction to coaching. It will suit you if you want to develop your knowledge so that you can work as an assistant coach.

You will complete four core units:

  • Understanding the fundamentals of coaching sport
  • Understanding the principles of planning coaching activities in sport
  • Understanding the principles of conducting coaching activities in sport
  • Understanding the principles of evaluating coaching activities in sport.

  • Supporting participant lifestyle through coaching sport
  • Understanding the principles of safe and equitable coaching practice.

  • Understanding the principles of planning coaching programmes
  • Understanding how to support participant lifestyle through coaching programmes.
