General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Each pathway provides learners with the opportunity to demonstrate competency in their chosen profession. The routes are suitable for a wide range of employers and include manufacturing, refurbishment and servicing of a wide range of systems.

You will learn in the work environment, or will need access to suitable tools and equipment.

Assessment will also be through a portfolio of evidence gathered to meet the criteria of the qualification.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2

You are working in aeronautical engineering, perhaps as a semi-skilled aerospace production worker or aircraft mechanic/technician. You have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

Level 3

You are working as a skilled aerospace production worker, trainee licensed aircraft maintenance engineer or aerospace engineer. You have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge and work with minimum supervision.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres currently offering the NVQ in Aeronautical Engineering (1689) without sanctions, will be automatically approved to deliver the new qualification.

There are no eligibility requirements for learners. However, those who have completed the Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Aerospace Engineering and Maintenance (2675) would find this a distinct advantage on this course.

Level 2

This level will suit you if you are working in aeronautical engineering, perhaps as a semi-skilled aerospace production worker or aircraft mechanic/technician. You have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

There are six qualifications available at this Level. To earn one of these qualifications you will complete four mandatory units and a number of optional units including:

  • Using and interpreting engineering data and documents
  • Aircraft systems maintenance
  • Survival equipment maintenance
  • Aircraft component assembly
  • Electrical and electronic
  • Composite manufacture.

Level 3

This level will suit you if you are currently working as a skilled aerospace production worker, trainee licensed aircraft maintenance engineer or aerospace engineer. You have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge, and work with minimum supervision.

There are two options available at this Level.

  • NVQ Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering
  • NVQ Extended Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering.

Both options comprise of 14 qualifications. The Extended Diplomas are a requirement of the Advanced Engineering Manufacture Apprenticeship framework. To earn one of these you will complete four mandatory and a number of optional units.
