Automotive Maintenance and Repair (4101)

Last Updated: 01 Nov 2018
The NVQs allow you to prove that you have the skills to maintain and repair vehicles - from mechanical and electrical work, re-sprays, bodywork and tyre fitting, to getting stranded motorists back on the road again.

These practical qualifications demonstrate your skills on the job, in your own workplace, showing that you meet national standards for automotive workers. They can take you from your first workshop repair job to a role where you supervise a team of people.

You could specialise in mechanical and electrical work, re-sprays and bodywork, tyre-fitting, or getting stranded motorists back on the road again.

These automotive qualifications give you lots of options - there are basic certificates and diplomas to get you started, and higher levels to help you move into a role where you supervise a team of people.
For the NVQs, you need a current job or work placement where you do repair work, body work, tyre-fitting or roadside recovery. If you don't have a suitable job or work placement, you could do the certificate or diploma version of the 4101 qualification. You might be a young learner (under 16) or an adult.

The VRQs are for anyone interested in starting or developing a career in the motor industry. You don't need any previous experience or a current work placement. You might be a young learner (under 16) or an adult.
Available to deliver in the following:
  • England
  • Wales – please check QiW website for available funding
  • Scotland
  • Northern Ireland
  • International

Level 3

Level 3 is ideal if you have plenty of experience in the motor industry, perhaps supervising others in a team. You want to develop your skills further in a specialist area such as electronics or bodywork and perhaps move into a management role or start your own business.

At Level 3 you choose from different qualifications depending on your job role. The options are:

  • NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  • NVQ in Vehicle Fitting Operations
  • NVQ in Roadside Assistance and Recovery.

You choose one specialist pathway within your chosen qualification, and you then complete a number of core and optional units (core units only in the Vehicle Fitting Operations qualification).

For a full list of units, download the qualification handbook from the centre documents section.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

After taking these automotive qualifications you'll have a qualification that show employers and customers you have the skills to work in one of a range of jobs - perhaps in a specialist repair or bodywork workshop, vehicle fitting specialists, or the roadside assistance and recovery sector.

Level 2 or Level 3 automotive qualification could help you get a more senior role as a fitter, mechanic, electrical engineer, vehicle breakdown engineer, or as a specialist finisher in car bodywork.

After achieving each level you can move onto the next level qualification.

If you enjoy leading teams of people at work you could also move onto a qualification as a team leader or supervisor. You can gain qualifications at Levels 2, 3 and 4 through ILM.

You can take some of these automotive qualifications as part of an industry Apprenticeship.
