The Certificate qualifications are suitable for you if you already work in tourism or are interested in a career in tourism, guiding or visitor services.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2

You are new to the travel and tourism industry and want to gain the skills you need to do your job well - or get the foundations to move on to the level 3 qualification.

Level 3
You've got a level 2 qualification in travel and tourism services, or lots of on-the-job experience. You're interested in moving on to a more responsible leadership role.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

The NVQ Diplomas in Travel and Tourism Services can help you get ahead in a range of roles including:

  • Tour manager
  • Travel agent
  • Tourist guide
  • Tourist information centre assistant
  • Museum visitor services assistant.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially. Usually, evidence of candidate performance will be derived from assessor observation and / or testimony from an expert witness of the candidate carrying out work activities in the workplace.

You'll need to ensure your learners have access to a work environment that gives them a chance to develop their skills to achieve industry standards- for example, working in a travel agency or tourist information centre.

There are no formal entry requirements for this NVQ, but centres must ensure that learners have the potential and opportunity to gain evidence for the qualification in the workplace. To find all the resource requirements, download the qualification handbook from the centre documents section.

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if you are new to the travel and tourism industry and want to gain the skills you need to do your job well - or get the foundations to move on to the Level 3 qualification.

There are a certificate and a diploma available at this level. Both require that you complete three mandatory units:

  • Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work in a travel and tourism environment.

To achieve the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Travel Services, you then choose one of two specialist pathways:

  • Visitor services
  • Guiding.

To achieve the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Travel Services, you choose a specialist pathway from the following:

  • Leisure and business
  • Tour operators (head office)
  • Tour operators (field staff).
