These qualifications are for those installing Gas or Electrical Power Smart Meter installers and will allow candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required to install and maintain Smart Meters and communication devices.

Smart Meters are part of the Government’s green agenda to provide real time energy consumption information to consumers and energy companies.

The gas and dual fuel pathways lead to Gas Safe registration.
Those working in the gas and power industries installing and maintaining Smart Meters.
Available to deliver in the following:

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

As well as covering essential areas such as communication and customer service, you can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed in the three key areas:

• Power
• Gas
• Dual fuel (Gas & Power)

You will learn in training centre/workshop and on the job in the work environment.

Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include practical tasks and questioning. Gas units are subject to an ACS (Gas Safe) aligned assessment.

Is this Level right for me?

Level 2 - You are working, or looking to work, in installing and maintaining Smart Meters and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

What Careers Can This Lead To?
These are designed for those installing and maintaining Smart Meters for electricity and gas.

Many of the skills learnt are transferable to other jobs in the gas and power industries.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres currently offering the Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering (2339-14 or 2339-34) have been automatically approved to deliver Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Power (7428-21).

Centres currently offering Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Natural Gas (6014-03) are approved to deliver Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Gas (7428-22).

Centres must currently offer both of these qualifications to have automatic approval to offer Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Dual Fuel (7428-23).

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if you are working or have just started working in installing and maintaining Smart Meters and have some relevant knowledge and skills. You might also have started an apprenticeship in Smart Metering.

There are three qualifications available at Level 2:

Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Power
Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Gas
Level 2 Diploma in Smart Metering - Dual Fuel
.

These comprise ten mandatory units from a wide range of units, including:

  • Working safely in the energy and utilities sector
  • Using and communicating technical information in the energy and utilities sector
  • Install and commission communication systems for smart meters
  • Install single phase meter and associated equipment
  • Applied practices and principles for installing low pressure natural gas smart meters up to U6 only
  • Prepare, install and commission low pressure natural gas smart meter
  • Low pressure gas smart meter tightness testing and direct purging.
In addition elective units, which do not form part of the qualification, provide additional competencies for fitting 3 phase power and intermediate pressure gas meters.
