New Apprenticeship Standards are designed by employer groups to be rigorous and respond to employers’ needs.
The new Level 3 Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) apprenticeship standard has been approved for delivery by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA). 

The Level 3 Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician   apprenticeship is designed for learners in Engineering roles of which there are many and would include: 

•Electrical Technician
•Process Control Technician
•Mechanical Technician 
 
The Level 3 Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician apprenticeship has a typical duration of 36- 42 months and is Level 3.  The apprentices’ journey begins with a period of learning and development assessment which covers the full range of knowledge, skills and behaviours required within the engineering environment. This is managed by the employer. In most cases, there’s also support from a training provider.

The apprentice may compile an evidence portfolio to support with the technical interview as part of the end point assessment. Apprentices would be expected to have achieved maths and English Level 2 before the learner takes their end-point assessment.
Finally the apprentice moves on to the final stage of end-point assessment made up of the following assessment methods:

•Online knowledge test
•Practical observation
•Technical interview

Learners having successfully completed Level 3 Maintenance & operations engineering technician  apprenticeship, may have the opportunity to progress onto a Level 4 Engineering apprenticeship

What is required in the Assessment Plan?

On-programme for this apprenticeship is a period of learning and development managed by the employer. In most cases, there’s also support from a training provider. City & Guilds have a range of qualifications and units to support the on programme element of the standard, for example, the City & Guilds 2850 Diploma in Engineering.

The learning will be built around competencies and skills as set out in the standard. The knowledge, skills and behaviours that will be developed during the on-programme learning will include:

Core Skills
• Comply with industry health, safety and environmental working practices and regulations.
•Locate, and rectify faults on plants and equipment           
•Communicate with and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal role and responsibilities.
•Read, understand and interpret information and work in a compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation
•Prepare work areas to undertake work related activities and reinstate those areas after completion of the work related activities                                                                             
•Inspect and maintain appropriate plant and equipment to meet operational requirements.
•Assess and test the performance and condition of plant and equipment
•Communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification.

•First principles relating to the operation and maintenance of appropriate plant and equipment
•Relevant industry health and safety standards, regulations, and environmental and regulatory requirements
•Maintenance and operational practices, processes and procedures covering a range of plant and equipment

Gateway
The employer and provider are required to sign-off the apprentice as ready to move on to end-point assessment.

 

End-point assessment

End-point assessment

The end-point assessment must demonstrate that the apprentice can perform in the occupation in a fully competent, holistic and productive way.  The assessment will be graded as required by the standard. The assessment organisation and assessor must be independent of, and separate from, the training provided by the provider and employer.

Apprenticeship certification
On successful completion, the end-point assessment organisation will apply to the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) for the apprenticeship certification. The certificate will then be sent to the apprentice’s employer
