Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (SVQs) (4310)

For people working on maintaining and repairing vehicles (such as cars, vans or trucks) who would like to demonstrate their competence on their own workplace in Scotland.
Learners can progress from their first workshop repair job to a supervisory role in a small family-run operation, a main dealer or even one of the largest manufacturers.
They are only available in Scotland and form part of the Modern Apprenticeship Frameworks in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
The SVQs in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair are for anyone developing a career in the motor industry. You will need a current job or work placement where you can carry out maintenance and repair work. If you don't have a suitable job or work placement, you could do one of our SCQF VRQs in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair for Scotland (4390).

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed in repairing and maintaining for light and/or heavy vehicles.

You will learn on the job in the work environment or in a suitably equipped classroom/workshop.

Assessment is via observation or a portfolio of evidence. For some units you may also have to complete an online knowledge test.

Which level is right for me?

SQCF Level 5: You are new to the motor vehicle industry, or preparing for your first job, and want to gain the skills you need to do your job well or get the foundation you need to move on to the next level of qualification.

SQCF Level 7: You are working in motor vehicle maintenance and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

On completion and achievement of these qualifications you can go on to gain various roles such as:

  • Light Vehicle/Heavy Vehicle Service Technician
  • Light Vehicle/Heavy Vehicle Diagnostic Technician.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors. You can train internal members of staff or recruit specially to carry out training and assessment.

You will need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Automatic approval will be given to offer the City & Guilds SVQs in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (4310) at the same level and area of your current 4101 provision and you will be able to make registrations straight away.

Anyone can take this qualification but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.

SCQF 5

This level will suit you if you are working in the automotive industry and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised. There are two qualifications available:
  • SVQ2 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at SCQF Level 5
  • SVQ2 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at SCQF Level 5

This level will suit you if you are an experienced worker in the automotive industry and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety and ensuring work meets the required standard. There are two qualifications available:

•    SVQ3 in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at SCQF Level 7
•    SVQ3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at SCQF Level 7
