These qualifications enable learners to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the marine engineering or boatbuilding maintenance sector.

These qualifications are for anyone who wants a career building, fitting out, finishing or maintaining boats. You don't need a current work placement or previous qualification.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You'll gain a thorough knowledge of yacht and boat construction - including assembly and subassembly, hull construction, installation and fitting out, and marine propulsion systems. You might well build a complete boat during the qualification.

You will learn at college in an appropriately equipped classroom.

Assessment will include online tests and assignments.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You have some relevant boat building knowledge and skills.

Level 3
You are experienced in boat building and maintenance and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress in a number of boatbuilding and maintenance roles, including:

Boat builder
Boat fitter
Joiner
Painter
Boat designer
Boatyard manager
Marine engineer.

Depending on the qualification, candidates who are successful will be able to progress in employment or to a range of further education and professional body qualifications. For example:

Apprenticeships
Advanced Apprenticeships
Higher Apprenticeships in Engineering Manufacturing
Foundation degrees
Supervisory or team leader roles within their companies

In addition, we also have a number of Higher Level qualifications offered through ILM.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres currently offering the Level 2 and 3 Certificate in Boat Building, Maintenance and Support (2451) which have been active during the last two years will be automatically approved for this qualification at the same level they are currently delivering.

There are no eligibility requirements.

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if you have some relevant boat building knowledge and skills.

This qualification has three pathways at Level 2:

Certificate in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (Boat building)
Certificate in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (Marine Engineering)
Certificate in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (Painting and Finishing).

These comprise mandatory and optional units, including:

Introduction to the marine industry
Production of external boat components
Maintaining electrical marine engineering equipment and systems.

Level 3 will suit you if you are experienced in boat building and maintenance and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge.

This qualification has three pathways at Level 3:

Diploma in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (Boat building)
Diploma in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (Marine Engineering)
Diploma in Marine Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (Painting and Finishing).

These comprise mandatory and optional units, including:

Construction and repair of hulls and boat structures
Principles of integrated marine electronic systems
Preparation of surfaces and marine coatings.
