New Apprenticeship Standards are designed by employer groups to be rigorous and respond to employers’ needs.

The new Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician standard has been approved for delivery and replaces the following current Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for England (SASE) frameworks:

Intermediate level apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair – pathway 2: Heavy vehicle

Advanced level apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair – pathway 2: Heavy vehicle

This Apprenticeship is aimed at learners who would like to become Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technicians.

A Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician inspects and repairs heavy vehicles, categorised by the Department of Transport as category N2 or N3, and associated trailers, with the associated ancillaries. They work in either a dealership that focuses on a particular manufacturer, or for an independent garage, franchise or large fleet operator that deals with many different makes of vehicle. They work on all systems found within the vehicle. The nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. The day-to-day tasks faced by the technician are constantly changing, driven by the introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques.


During the three-year programme, the apprentice will acquire the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected from a competent technician. During this time the employer, apprentice and education and training provider must regularly monitor, review progress and assess on-programme performance.

As part of the independent end assessment, apprentices have to participate in a professional discussion. During this discussion the behaviours of the apprentice throughout the apprenticeship will be examined, in line with the requirements of the standard.

To reflect accurately on past performance, it’s strongly recommended that apprentices complete regular evaluations throughout their learning and development journey with input from their employer. These evaluations, which are completed at least annually will be referenced in the professional discussion as part of the independent end assessment.

A formal meeting will be held once the apprentice has completed their training, development and on-programme assessment over a minimum twelve month (typically three-year) period, and demonstrated competence across the entire standard. This meeting must include the relevant people that have responsibility and accountability for the completion of the apprenticeship, for example: the line manager, continuous assessor and/or a senior manager as appropriate to the business. The purpose of this meeting is to confirm the apprentice's readiness for independent end assessment and plan the assessment activities.

End-point assessment

City & Guilds is an approved assessment organisation on the Register of Apprentice Assessment Organisations (RoAAO) for this apprenticeship standard.

We can assess apprentices on your premises or provide a City & Guilds' test centre near you.

We will provide an end-point assessment handbook for the centre with guidance on preparing candidates, how to register them and what facilities you will need if you are providing the venue for assessment.
