These qualifications were replaced by 2305 Electrical Power Engineering qualifications in March 2021. The updated qualification content is based on the National Occupational Standards developed by Energy & Utility Skills for the industry.

These SCQF level 5 & 6 knowledge and competence qualifications cover all the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in electrical power engineering and to specialise in overhead lines, substation plants or underground cables, which is considered to be a credit based qualifications. 

They form part of the Energy & Utility Skills Modern Apprenticeship framework.
These qualifications are for those in the power industry working as overhead line, substation plant or underground cable engineers. They could be undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship, wishing to gain knowledge and prove competence or progress to a more responsible role.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

The knowledge qualifications include:

  • Legislation
  • Mathematics and mechanical and electrical theory
  • Cables, substations and overhead lines.

The Level 3 also includes supervision of others  and design principles.

For the competence qualifications you can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed. Unit options include:

  • installing plant and apparatus
  • testing and maintenance
  • health and safety
  • jointing
  • working with fibre optics
  • carrying out inspections.

You will learn on the job in the work environment. Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include an evidence book and practical tests.

Which level is right for me?

This will depend on your job role and might mean completing a level 5 qualification prior to a level 6.

For some occupations with a high degree of technical knowledge and skill you might move straight to level 6.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications, you will need qualified assessors.  You can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres currently offering the qualification 2339 have automatic approval to offer these qualifications.

There are no eligibility requirements.

Level 5

Level 5 is ideal if you are new to the power industry, or preparing for your first job, and want to gain the skills you need to do your job well or get the foundation you need to move on to the next level of qualification.

There are four qualifications available:
  • Level 5 Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Substation Plant
  • Level 5 Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Underground Cables
  • Level 5 Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Overhead Lines
  • Level 5 Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Distribution & Transmission Technical Knowledge

The competence qualifications comprise mandatory and optional units, including:

  • Working safely in the power sector
  • Electrical and functional testing of plant and apparatus
  • Install underground cables
  • Live low-voltage distribution work.

The knowledge qualification contains seven mandatory units including:

  • Power engineering: electrical networks, plant & apparatus
  • Mathematics, mechanical & electrical theory in power engineering
  • Power engineering: cables, sub stations, and overhead lines

Level 6

 

Level 6 will suit you if you've got an SCQF Level 5 qualification in electrical power engineering, or have lots of knowledge and practical experience. You're interested in moving on to a more responsible role. 

There are four qualifications available:
  • Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Substation Plant
  • Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Underground Cables
  • Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Overhead Lines.
  • Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering - Distribution & Transmission Technical Knowledge

The competence qualifications comprise mandatory and optional units, including:

  • Overhead line fault diagnosis
  • Hotglove operations
  • Complex earthing of overhead line transmission conductors
  • Fibre optic fusing, splicing and terminations
  • Inspection and maintenance of battery systems.
The knowledge qualification contains seven mandatory units including:
  • Electrical theory and principles in power engineering
  • Mathematics in power engineering
  • Mechanical theory and principles in power engineering
