Depending on which qualification you take, you'll cover things like:
• preparing to enter and work safely in confined spaces
• entering and exiting confined spaces
• preparing and using respiratory protective equipment (RPE) for working and escape purposes
• using equipment and tools safely
• dealing with emergencies.
The qualifications are delivered through a combination of practical and theoretical training at a City & Guilds centre. You will look at areas such as: risk assessments, classifications of confined spaces, equipment and procedures.
Each operational qualification is assessed through a practical observation and written assessment. The management qualification is through scenario based assessment.
More information can be found in the qualification handbook, available to download from the key documents section.
Which Level is right for me?
Level 2 - These qualifications are for entry in to confined spaces
Level 3 - These cover those who are involved as a Top Man or in Emergency Rescue
Level 5 - This is for those who manage confined space entry
Any room or enclosed area can be classified as a confined space. You could already be working in or managing a number of roles, for example:
• Underground engineer
• Water distribution/Sewerage process operator
• Water jetter
• Water/Wastewater treatment plant operator
• Boiler/plant room maintenance
To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment and assessment facilities that meet the specification in the handbook.
The operational qualifications are assessed by a practical demonstration and a written test. The managing qualification is by scenario based assessment.
Any learners aged 16 and over are eligible to undertake the assessments. In practice, though, learners will already be employed and aged 18 and over.
For qualifications in Emergency Rescue (6150-05 and 6150-55), learners must have already successfully completed the 6150-03 and 6150-53 High Risk qualifications.
