Study Technical Qualifications

City & Guilds Technical Qualifications are practical courses that have been designed, with employers, for 14-19 year olds. They have been recognised on par with GCSEs and A Levels, and carry UCAS points at Level 3. With these qualifications, you can progress to an apprenticeship, university or go straight into a job.

  • Progression routes

Our Key Stage 5 Technical Qualifications allow learners to progress onto apprenticeships, employment or to a related higher education course. Centre support for HEI admissions and university queries

To help centres who may have university and HEI admissions queries, we’ve put together a handy checklist to help you.

View HEI flow chart and checklist document >

In 2017,  a new UCAS tariff was introduced for higher education courses. It is based on a new approach, using a qualification’s size and grades to calculate total tariff points.

To work out how many UCAS points your qualifications are worth, use the UCAS calculator.

Our Grade Calculation Guide explains how we carry out grading aggregation of theory exams and synoptic assignments for Technical Qualifications.

View tables for the allocated points for each grade (PDF, 25.3KB)

Note: Not all universities and colleges use the UCAS tariff when making offers to prospective students, but if you’re concerned about whether a qualification will be accepted, it’s best to get in touch with the university or college directly for more details on their entry requirements for the particular course of interest.
