Video: Steve Gelder MBE talks about his journey to success.

In May 2013, construction entrepreneur Steve Gelder won the coveted City & Guilds Prince Philip Medal in recognition of his outstanding professional achievements. He received his medal from Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace at the annual Prince Philip Medal ceremony.

The Prince Philip Medal has been presented since 1962 and honours those who, in The Duke of Edinburgh’s own words, have ‘travelled the City & Guilds path’ and made the most of their talents. No stranger to awards, in 2007 Steve was also awarded an MBE for Services to Business and the Community.

Steve, from Lincoln, started his career as a bricklaying apprentice when he was just 16 years old, having left school with no qualifications. At 22, he set up his own business and now, 25 years later, Gelder Group is a diverse £40 million business, employing 300 people. As well as being a successful businessman, Steve has also shown a staunch dedication to apprenticeships – in fact, Gelder Group has trained over 250 apprentices over the years. In the future, he is keen to act as a City & Guilds Apprenticeship Ambassador, inspiring and supporting other employers in discovering the benefits apprenticeships can offer.
