      Training needs

Currently, there is a rising demand for skilled candidates in the agricultural, engineering, oil & gas, hair & beauty, hospitality, manufacturing and retail sectors in a number of African economies.

At the same time there is a significant skills mismatch: 70% of African university graduates are unable to fill jobs in those sectors, because they hold humanities and social sciences degrees, according to a 2013 study by the OECD.

A good example is South Africa, where employers experienced a 23% jump in the difficulty to find the right candidates in 2015. There are 214 occupations on the country’s Critical Skills Visa List open for foreign workers. At the same time youth unemployment in the country averages at 35% per year.

City & Guilds is helping address these challenges by offering country-specific and internationally recognised qualifications in Africa.

For example we help tackle youth unemployment through our International City & Guilds diploma in Hairdressing. This qualification – recognised by local employers – was developed in cooperation with employers’ organisations and trade unions.

We have also created routes for underprivileged learners to enter engineering courses. Our Mathematics and Science qualifications enable them to enroll in further education colleges and later, to pursue a career in engineering.
