Following on from Team GB’s success at London 2012 Olympics, the UK has shown its talent once again at EuroSkills in Spa, Belgium. The event, which took place between 4-6 October, saw Europe’s most talented skilled young people coming together to compete in their chosen skill.

It forms part of the training programme for Squad UK members, ahead of them competing in March for a place in the team that will represent the UK at WorldSkills Leipzig 2013. Those who don’t take part in EuroSkills will participate in other competitions and industry events as part of their training programmes, such as The Skills Show in November.

Squad UK put in an impressive performance, and managed to secure a total of seven medals, including three gold medals. Please see the full list of medal winners below:

Gold
Hannah Clague, 21, from Gloucester - Hairdressing
Philip Glasgow, 21, from Cookstown - Carpentry
Gareth Jones, 19, from Ammanford - Carpentry

Silver
Sarah Smithers, 20, from Woking - Window Display
Jenna Stephenson, 18, from Liverpool - Window Display

Bronze
Reece Johnston, 20, from Leicester - Painting and Decorating
Robert Broomsgrove, 20, from Highbridge - Stonemasonry

In addition 11 Medals of Excellence were awarded to Squad UK competitors that achieved a point score of at least 500, meaning they achieved the WorldSkills standard of excellence in their skill.

Speaking about Squad UK’s success, Jaine Bolton, Chief Operating Officer, National Apprenticeship Service said: ‘Congratulations to Squad UK. Their fantastic performance at EuroSkills Spa 2012 has shown how talented our apprentices and young people are.

‘We want Squad UK’s performance at EuroSkills to inspire our young people, just like the Olympics did, and show them that apprenticeships can lead to rewarding and successful careers.’
