ESOL Skills for Life

ESOL Skills for Life is a suite of qualifications designed to support speakers of other languages based within the UK to develop their English language skills for work, further learning or everyday life.

What sets City & Guilds ESOL Skills for Life apart?

Our offer has been developed to best suit the specific needs of ESOL centres and learners, supporting flexible delivery, responsive assessment and encouraging maximum learner engagement.

With City & Guilds ESOL Skills for Life centres will benefit from:

  • Sector experience – we have worked with a range of ESOL specialists, each with extensive experience of developing credit based qualifications.
  • Employer recognition – our ESOL Skills for Life qualifications have been validated by employers as being relevant to the world of work.
  • Adult funding – ESOL Skills for Life is funded for learners who meet the eligibility criteria under the Adult Education Budget (AEB), intended specifically to support English language development for speakers of other languages. Qualifications are available as Awards and Certificates, supporting learners to move onto other qualifications, into apprenticeships or into work.

We have partnered with Klik2Learn to offer Journey 2 English, a digital course for intermediate learners of English. It is aligned to City & Guilds ESOL Skills for Life (4692) qualification and available through our SmartScreen platform at a per-learner licencing model.

“We have been with City and Guilds for Functional Skills for quite a while, but recently starting using them for our ESOL provision.
The onboarding and ongoing support has been invaluable and has made sure that the team and, more importantly, the learners understand what is expected of them and how to conduct the various exams.  The adoption of City and Guilds’ ESOL qualifications has been such a positive experience.”
Jacqui Manton, Curriculum Lead
Hertfordshire County Council

Structure

Available as a full-length certificate sized qualification, or as single unit, award-sized qualifications.

  • Flexible delivery – both ‘award-sized’ and a ‘full-mode’ certificate available to suit different learner needs and modes of delivery which allows learners to focus on particular linguistic modes where they need support.
  • Minimum risk pricing – Award-sized is paid for on receipt of results, which means no fees are payable if the candidates drop out or do not undergo assessment.

Assessment

On demand assessment allows candidates to be assessed as soon as they are ready with tests written specifically for ESOL learners.

  • Unique units - we have taken a fresh approach and have worked independently to develop units unique to City & Guilds. Our assessments were deliberately designed alongside our units, ensuring a close fit between the two.
  • On-demand assessment - all assessments are either centre-based or for Reading at Level 1 and 2 available either as a paper-based assessment or can be delivered on-screen through our e-volve platform.

Support

Our SmartScreen platform contains a huge range or resources which have been mapped to the Adult Literacy (and Numeracy) Standards which can be used to support ESOL teaching and learning.

  • Complementary wider Maths and English offer - our ESOL Skills for Life qualifications are complemented by an extensive range of maths and English qualifications including framework qualifications, Functional Skills and Essential Skills.
