Medical Secretaries (5519)

AMSPARThese qualifications were developed in partnership with AMSPAR (The Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers, Administrators and Receptionists). They will prepare the learner to work in the field of medical administration learning skills in medical terminology and data protection.

The new 5519 qualifications replace the old 4415/4419 Level 2/3 Medical Administration and Medical Terminology.

With a Awards, Certificates and Diplomas in Medical Administration you can start or develop your career as a medical administrator or secretary, helping patients and providing vital support for doctors and other healthcare professionals.
At a higher level, these qualifications give you everything you need to know to help keep a busy GP surgery or hospital department running smoothly - they can help you move into a senior management role in the healthcare sector.
You'll gain the skills needed to communicate effectively and manage staff, processes and healthcare resources at a high level.
Apprenticeships. 

A new qualification, 5528-22/23 Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Medical Administration, will be created using the new Business Administration units developed by CFA. 5528-22/23 uses the new 5519 Medical Secretaries units alongside the new Business Administration units to create a hybrid qualification. These are due to go live Sept 14 and will replace the current Technical Certificates within the current Medical pathway in the Business and Administration Apprenticeships. 5519 will still be available as a qualification in its own right outside of the apprenticeship.

These qualifications will also form part of the new apprenticeship package this package will be available for all nations for the Business and Administration and Legal and Medical Administration qualifications under 9465.

A medical administration qualifications are ideal if you're interested in a career in administration. They are also designed for those working as a medical or general administrator looking to advance in their career. Existing and aspiring managers already working, or who wish to work, in a primary care or in a health and social care environment can also take these qualifications in order to move into a more senior management role such as GP Practice Manager or hospital department manager.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Depending on the level you choose, you'll learn:

  • How to book patient appointments efficiently
  • The meaning of medical terms
  • How to keep confidential information up to date
  • Audio transcription and IT skills
  • How to communicate sensitively and effectively in a medical environment.

For the Award, Certificate or Diploma in Medical Administration, you'll learn either in a group environment with a training provider or through training in your workplace.

Assessments depend on which units you take - you could be assessed using written tests, assignments or a mini-portfolio.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

A medical administration qualification can help you jump-start a career as an administrator in a hospital or receptionist in a GP's surgery or as a consultant's secretary.

To move further up the ladder or branch out into other areas of administration, you could think about these other qualifications too:

  • Level 2-4 of the N/SVQ in Business and Administration - develop your general administrative skills
  • N/SVQ in Customer Service - learn how to better meet patient needs
  • Business Skills qualifications - develop a broad range of skills that can help you better manage an office
  • Qualification for Legal Secretaries - explore another side of administration and build specialist skills.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners have the potential and opportunity to complete it.

At higher levels, learners will need at least two years' experience in the healthcare sector and be educated to at least Level 3 standard, with a good level of spoken and written English.

Depending on the units they choose, your learners will be assessed using external tests, written assignments, a portfolio of evidence, electronic assignments.

Assessment is via a business plan for the higher level diploma.

Level 2

If you're a young or adult learner looking or employment or already employed in an administration/receptionist role, the Level 2 awards, certificate and diploma will give you the tools to provide effective administrative support within any health care setting.
