Important update 2022
The 601/7240/X Level 2 Technical Award in Land Based Studies (0170-20) is closing for registrations on the 31st July 2022, and will be replaced by the 610/0652/X Level 2 Technical Award in Land Based Studies (0170-24), which has been approved by the DfE for the 2024 Key Stage 4 performance tables.  Please ensure new starts for September 2022 are registered on the new qualification.  Some changes have been made to the assessment strategy, please refer to the 0170-24 Qualification Handbook in the documents section.

The Level 2 Technical Award in Land Based Studies allows learners to gain theoretical knowledge and a small number of technical skills, related to the land-based sector, not usually acquired through general education.

This qualification allows you to investigate how land is utilised in the UK, for example food and energy production, forestry, leisure use, housing and the rural and urban infrastructure.  As part of this programme of study you will investigate the changing use of land over time, look at the advancement of technology within the wider land based industries. There is also the opportunity to develop your plant and animal husbandry skills for a potential future career.

This Technical Award is aimed at learners aged 14-16 (Key stage 4) studying in full time education.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?
Learners interested in the Level 2 Technical Award in Land Based Studies will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

Compulsory topics include:
  • Exploring the use of land
  • Application of science in the land-based sector
  • Application of technology in the land-based sector

What Careers Can This Lead To?
Your understanding and skills can be developed further through progression to other qualifications, such as A levels or specific to a sector, including:
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificates in all the Land based sectors
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical qualifications in the Land based sectors.
You would also find the understanding and skills useful to progress to an apprenticeship.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?
To deliver this qualification, centres/colleges will need to provide their learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification.
