Gas Utilisation (6014)

These Diplomas have been designed for the Gas installation industry. Completion of any pathways in 6014-03, 6014-05 and 6014-13 will enable learners to apply for Gas Safe Registration and work in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey. This flexible qualification offers two options:

• Matters of Gas Safety aligned (6014-03, 6014-05 & 6014-13) - for those undertaking an apprenticeship or employed in the industry, offering installation and/or maintenance on a range of appliances.
• Non Matters of Gas Safety Aligned (6014-04) - a knowledge-based qualification for those who may not currently be working in the industry. The units in this qualification count towards achieving any pathway in 6014-03, 6014-05 or 6014-13.

6014-03, 6014-05 & 6014-13 qualifications form part of an apprenticeship in Gas Utilisation.

6014-13 is an APL route which provides credit for specified plumbing qualifications.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the pathway that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed. These could include:
  • Gas emergencies
  • Gas installation and/or maintenance for cookers, tumble dryers, leisure, domestic space heating, wet central heating and domestic warm air
  • Safe working practices
  • Planning work activities
  • Maintaining a safe working environment
  • Gas Safety
You will learn on the job in the work environment, or in the classroom with realistic situations and appliances.

You will be assessed in a number of ways – including knowledge questions, Gas Safety RWE practical, a portfolio of evidence and observation.
 
Is this level right for me?
Level 3 - You are an apprentice, new to the industry, or experienced and looking to up skill and require a licence to practise to join the Gas Safe Register in order to work as a gas engineer in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey.

 You may also be looking to complete the knowledge element of your apprenticeship in gas utilisation before gaining employment.

If you are in Scotland you might wish to undertake 5991 which is a limited pathway SCQF version of 6014.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors and suitable facilities – The requirements for these can be found in the qualification handbook.

You will have been given automatic approval for the Level 3 diploma if you offer:

• NVQ in Domestic Natural Gas Installation and Maintenance and Emergency Services Operations (6012)
• Certificates in Domestic Natural Gas Installation and Maintenance and Emergency Services Operations (6132)
• NVQ in Domestic Natural Gas (6034).

Those learners taking the 6014-03, 6014-05 or 6014-13 pathway of the Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Natural Gas will be working in the Gas Utilisation industry.

There are no specific eligibility requirements for the 6014-04 pathway of Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Natural Gas.

One or more pathways within this qualification has been approved by the DfE to appear in the 2016 Performance Tables. To review the qualifications approved please click here.

Level 3 is ideal if you are an experienced gas engineer and require a licence to practise to join the Gas Safe Register in order to work as a gas engineer in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey. You may also be looking to complete the knowledge element of your apprenticeship.

There are several suites of qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Gas Utilisation (Non Matters of Gas Safety Aligned) (6014-04). For those seeking a career in the industry
  • Level 3 Diploma in Gas Utilisation (Matters of Gas Safety Aligned) (6014-05). For those who want to include energy efficiency units
  • Level 3 Diploma in Gas Utilisation (Matters of Gas Safety Aligned) (6014-13). For those who have existing plumbing qualifications

Each comprises the following mandatory units:

  • Understanding health and safety in gas utilisation
  • Understanding scientific principles in gas utilisation
  • Understanding combustion and properties of gas
  • Understanding building services and structures
  • Understanding gas safety.
