Tunnel Entry (6151)

This qualification has been developed from the national occupational standards for medium risk confined space for use in Tunnel Entry and Emergency Procedures. 

It has been developed in conjunction with industry experts to be a pre-requisite for entering any tunnel. It is normal practice for it to be re-taken on a 3 year cycle.

The resource are a mix of VR [Virtual Reality] and AR [Augmented Reality] apps and scenarios that can be used in training settings and inductions.

This qualification is for anyone working in or entering a tunnel. For some roles Confined Spaces qualifications 6160 might be more appropriate.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?
This qualification will cover things like:
  • Work safely in tunnels and shafts
  • Enter and exit tunnels and shafts
  • Prepare and using respiratory protective equipment (RPE) for escape purposes
  • Understand industry standards
  • Dealing with emergencies
The qualification is delivered through a combination of practical and theoretical training at a City & Guilds centre.

Each qualification is assessed through a practical observation and written assessment.

Level 2
These qualifications are for those working in or needing to access tunnels  What careers can this lead to?Suitable for many roles including
  • Tunnel operations engineer

And those involved in M&E and other fit out and maintenance.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?
To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified and approved staff to carry out the training and assessment and approved assessment facilities that meet the specification in the handbook.

This qualification is assessed by practical observation and a multiple choice test.

Any learners aged 16 and over are eligible to undertake the assessments. In practice, though, learners will already be employed and aged 18 and over.

Level 2

This Level 2 will help you work safely in tunnel construction, fit out and maintenance.

You will learn how to enter, exit, work safely and the associated emergency procedures.
