These qualifications have been developed to be included within the Foundation Phase of the new Apprenticeship Standards for Boatbuilders, Marine Engineer, and Marine Electrician which will replace the current Level 2 and Level 3 Marine, Construction, Systems Engineering and Maintenance (Boatbuilding and Marine Engineering) SASE Frameworks.

New Apprenticeship Standards are designed by employer groups to be rigorous and respond to employers’ needs.

The qualifications can also be used for full time students who would like to gain the basic knowledge and skills that will enable them to progress into further training to become a boatbuilder, marine engineer or marine electrician.

These qualifications are to be offered to learners aged 16 and above, either for boatbuilding, marine engineering apprentices or marine electrician apprentices or full time students.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

The main topics covered in these qualifications are:

  • Introduction to the marine industry.
  • Principles of boatbuilding technology.
  • Marine engineering processes and principles.
  • Business improvement techniques.
  • Yacht and boatbuilding assembly and sub-assembly.
  • Interior installation and fitting out of boats.
  • FRP manufacture for marine construction.
  • Servicing and maintenance of marine engines and ancillary systems.
  • Servicing and maintenance of marine propulsion systems.
  • Installing electrical wiring support system
  • Principles of marine electrical systems
  • Principles of integrated marine electronic systems

Learners will be trained at college in an appropriately equipped classroom.

Assessment will include: online tests, short answer questions and assignments.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Upon completion of these qualifications learners will have developed most of the basic skills and knowledge required during their foundation phase of the Apprenticeship and will enable them to progress into further training to become a boatbuilder, a marine engineer or a marine electrician.

 

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications centres will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

Centres will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Level 2

Learners will be introduced to the scope and opportunities offered within the wider marine sector. 

They will develop the range of transferable skills over a cross section of production, manufacturing, service and construction sectors which are valued by employers and therefore increase your employability skills. 

Learners will also gain the skills to work competently with at least two different types of materials, including wood, composites and metals and will understand the engineering processes and principles of marine engines, ancillary systems and marine propulsion systems.

All the above will enable learners to progress into further training to become a boatbuilder or a marine engineer or a marine electrician.

Level 3

This qualification is aimed at learners aged 16 and above who would like to gain the advanced knowledge and skills training required to become a Boatbuilder or a Marine Engineer or a Marine Electrician, either as part of the development phase of their apprenticeship or as full time students.

Learners will progress into this level upon completion of either the Level 2 Diploma in Boatbuilding (Foundation) or the Level 2 Diploma in Marine Engineering (Foundation), depending on the job role they want to specialize on.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Upon completion of this qualification, learners will have developed the knowledge, skills and behaviors required to progress into the end point assessment of their apprenticeship to become a competent Boatbuilder or a Marine Engineer or a Marine Electrician.

On successful completion of the whole apprenticeship standard, learners will be recognized by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) at Engineering Technician level.
