The Land-Based Industries Employer Industry Boards are formed of voluntary members who advise on City & Guilds’ product strategy, providing advice and information to City & Guilds to ensure that products and services meet the needs of industry, are inclusive and support the progression from education to work. The Land-Based Industry Boards facilitate close partnerships with a wide range of key industry experts, employers, and stakeholders.

Animal Care, Management and Science

The Pet Industry is now worth over £6billion to the UK economy. Within it, there are over 13,000 businesses, employing more than 120,000 people and supported by tens of thousands of volunteers. It is a diverse industry with sub-specialisms which include boarding kennels, catteries, breeders, training, grooming, animal welfare charities, zoos, wildlife parks, public services, and performing animals in film and television.

Crop production businesses focus on managing field crops, for example businesses who deal with wheat, oats, peas, oilseed rape and grass for your livestock, and container grown crops such as fruit, salads and vegetables.

The floristry industry is predominantly retail and has specialisms within it to cover events; floral design, creation, retail, wholesale, and delivery. It is made up of 8,400 businesses that are mainly micro-businesses and contribute £1.5 million to the UK.

Horticulture, landscaping and sports turf plays a crucial role in the design, construction, management, and maintenance of the UK, employing around 172,000 people. Specialisms include landscaping, sports, golf, botanical gardens, parks.

The land-based engineering industry in the UK is worth £4 billion. It is made up of approximately 3,350 businesses and 22,850 employees. The business types include dealerships, manufacturers, ground care, forestry, and garden machinery dealers and manufacturers.

Livestock Production

Within the UK agriculture industry there are 150,000 businesses which make up 6% of all UK businesses. These businesses employ 660,000 people across crop and livestock. Livestock production businesses include managing dairy cows, cattle for beef, sheep for wool and lamb, pigs, and poultry. It also includes managing crops for your livestock.

The trees and woodlands industry includes the specialisms of forestry, arboriculture, harvesting and timber processing businesses. It contributes more than £286 million to the UK economy and employs an estimated 22,452 people through 3,920 businesses.
