Creating opportunities to practice English-language skills in the workplace
For many learners studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) qualifications, opportunities to practise English in real-world situations can be limited – especially in the workplace. This can create barriers to employment, because while people may have the technical knowledge and capability to succeed, a lack of confidence and communication challenges can create a barriers.
Recognising this challenge, Derby Adult Learning Service wanted to create opportunities for people to build confidence, develop workplace communication skills and apply their learning in authentic settings:
"Our students have huge potential, but they can't utilise those skills because of a lack of English, so this course really allows that potential to be released. It builds confidence."

Alongside its ESOL provision, the Better Together Café offers contextualised vocational learning opportunities that allow learners to practise English while gaining hands-on experience in hospitality and catering. Learners develop the language of work through interactions with customers and colleagues, while also building technical and employability skills in a supportive environment.
The café forms part of a broader offer designed to support learners at different stages of their journey, from those developing everyday functional English to learners progressing through qualifications and vocational training.

Creating pathways into employment and building community
For many learners, it also helps bridge the gap between previous experience and future employment opportunities in the UK. The wider impact extends beyond language development. By working closely with employers and understanding local skills gaps, Derby Adult Learning Service helps create pathways into employment and supports stronger connections between learners, employers and local communities.
