This qualification will provide proof of a basic practical ability, knowledge and understanding of jewellery making at the standard recognised by employers in goldsmithing and allied trades. This qualification is part of the apprenticeship framework.

Those with some experience of jewellery making looking to work in the industry, and apprentices and professional jewellery makers looking to progress in their careers.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You will be able to develop and demonstrate the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed such as

Interpreting jewellery manufacture drawings
Marking out and measuring materials for jewellery
Using tools to cut, file and pierce jewellery
Using tools to produce formed jewellery
Using equipment to permanently join jewellery or silverware components
Using techniques to polish and finish jewellery
Using tools to produce hand engraving on jewellery or silverware products.

You will learn on the job in the work environment or in the classroom.

Assessment will include a portfolio of evidence to meet the criteria of the qualification.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You have basic jewellery making skills and knowledge and are working, or looking to work, in the goldsmithing sector or allied trades.

Level 3
You have intermediate jewellery making skills and knowledge and are working, or looking to work, in the goldsmithing sector or allied trades. The qualifications are a natural progression for those with a Level 2 Diploma.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress in a wide range of roles in the jewellery manufacturing sector including:

Designer
Craftsperson.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

There are no eligibility requirements.

Level 2

Level 2 is ideal if you have basic jewellery making skills and knowledge and are working, or looking to work, in the goldsmithing sector or allied trades.

This comprises mandatory units from a range, including:

Interpret jewellery manufacture or silversmithing drawings
Mark out and measure materials for jewellery and silverware components
Know the properties of common precious metals and alloys used in jewellery manufacture or silversmithing
Use tools to produce formed jewellery or formed silverware components
Use equipment to permanently join jewellery or silverware components
Use hand and mechanical techniques to polish and finish jewellery or silverware components
Use tools to produce hand engraving on jewellery or silverware products
Use techniques to identify and secure stone in settings in jewellery or silverware products.

You have intermediate jewellery making skills and knowledge and are working, or looking to work, in the goldsmithing sector or allied trades. The qualifications are a natural progression for those with a Level 2 Diploma.

There are seven Level 3 Diploma qualifications:

Level 3 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacturing
Level 3 Diploma in Silversmithing
Level 3 Diploma in Precious Metal Engraving
Level 3 Diploma in Precious Metal Polishing and Finishing
Level 3 Diploma in Gem Setting
Level 3 Diploma in Precious Metal CAD/CAM
Level 3 Diploma in Precious Metal Enamelling.

Each diploma comprises a combination of mandatory and optional units including:

Produce precious metal objects from detailed drawings and specifications
Mark out and measure materials for the manufacture of precious metal objects
Apply concepts of metallurgy to the production of precious metal objects
Saw and pierce jewellery components
Form jewellery components
Join jewellery components by soldering
Use mechanical methods to join precious metal components
Produce tools and jigs for use in the manufacture of precious metal objects.
