A suite of qualifications which measure the knowledge and skills required to meet the support needs of primary, secondary and special needs schools. Achieving one of the qualifications demonstrates an individual's ability relating to pupil welfare, care, behaviour and learning.
The qualifications are suitable for those already working as learning support staff in schools.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Depending on the level you choose, you'll cover things like:

  • promoting positive behaviour
  • supporting pupils
  • using information and communication technology
  • helping with children's social development.

For further information on how you will be taught, please speak to your training provider.

Assessment will be via assignments, case studies, observations of work practices, expert witness testimonies, simulation and professional discussion.

Which Level is right for me?

Level 2
You are already working in a school and want a qualification that proves your skills and helps you develop your career.

Level 3
You have significant experience as a school support worker and wish to move into a more specialised role - in administration, learning support or management.

On completion of these qualifications, you can gain a role supporting staff in schools.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

There are no eligibility requirements.

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if you are already working in a school and want a qualification that proves your skills and helps you develop your career.

There are three qualifications to choose from at this level:

  • Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools
  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting the Wider Curriculum in Schools.

To complete the Level 2 Award, learners must achieve nine credits from the mandatory units and three credits from the optional units available. Units include:

  • Child and young person development (2 credits)
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people (2 credits)
  • Schools as organisations (3 credits).

Level 2 certificates are also comprised of both mandatory and optional units, including:

  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people (3 credits)
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools (3 credits)
  • Support children and young people's positive behaviour (2 credits)
  • Provide displays in schools (3 credits)
  • Provide support for therapy sessions (2 credits).

Level 3

Level 3 is ideal if you have significant experience as a school support worker and wish to move into a more specialised role - in administration, learning support and management.

There are four qualifications to choose from at this level:

  • Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Certificate in Cover Supervision
  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools.

The Award is comprised of mandatory units, including:

  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults (2 credits)
  • Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people.

Units for the longer Certificates include:

  • Support learning activities (4 credits)
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people (2 credits)
  • Support assessment for learning (4 credits).

To achieve the Diploma, you must complete both mandatory and optional units. Optional units have been divided into the following six groups:

  • Group A - Supporting learning
  • Group B - English as an additional language
  • Group C - Special educational needs
  • Group D - Providing pastoral support
  • Group E - Supporting the wider work of the school
  • Group F - Working with colleagues.
