Customer Story: Veolia’s Assured training programme

External validation of their in-house training programme is helping Veolia deliver consistent, high-quality training to their technicians worldwide – and strengthen trust with their customers along the way.

Veolia set up its Life Science Centre of Excellence in Ireland in 2024, with a mission to train employees across its global operations.

Before the Centre of Excellence was established, service training varied significantly across different regions and business units. Without a unified, standardised curriculum, training was largely fragmented. Business units designed and executed their own training programmes, leading to substantial variations in course structure, technical depth and assessment standards. For example, a service engineer in the UK might undergo one training framework, while a colleague in France would follow a completely different set of modules. This lack of consistency meant that technician capabilities and operational practices differed from market to market, making it difficult to benchmark expertise or maintain uniform service delivery across global client operations.

With a team of subject matter experts and experienced curriculum developers, Veolia built a structured training pathway in Purified Water Treatment that is now delivered from the Centre of Excellence to technicians from around the world.

Because Veolia’s training is so specialised, flexibility was essential when selecting an external partner to quality assure the programme. At City & Guilds, we can validate and quality assure any type of internally developed training from any sector or industry because we review your systems and processes, not the content or delivery of your training.

“Assured suited us because our programme is so niche – there’s nothing like it anywhere else. It was so flexible to our needs, and that’s why we went with City & Guilds, because of that flexibility.”

Rosie Brady, Training Partner, Veolia

With a new programme and facility, it was important to Veolia to demonstrate that their training was high quality. And knowing their programme is reviewed again each year as part of their Assured renewal keeps the team at Veolia motivated to continually improve it.

“It helps us check ourselves. We didn’t have anything to benchmark against – having the Assured programme helped us achieve a really good quality training programme that we’re very proud of.”

Rosie Brady, Training Partner, Veolia

The impact of Veolia’s Assured training has been felt right across the business, with a positive effect on recruitment, retention, development and, perhaps most importantly, on how customers see Veolia’s engineers. With the ability to view technicians’ digital credentials from City & Guilds, customers have confidence that the person on site knows exactly what they’re doing.

That confidence is echoed by the technicians going through the training themselves. The reaction from employees has been overwhelmingly positive – many had been asking for this level of training and Veolia listened.

The next goal for the team is to build on this pathway and expand their training portfolio by keeping up to date with the latest technologies in water treatment and ensuring their employees are trained to a high standard.
