Performing Engineering Operations (7682)

They are essential for anyone starting out in a career in engineering and advanced manufacturing. Undertaken in either the workplace or College environment they allow people to demonstrate their competence, set against National Occupational Standards, in a wide range of engineering disciplines.

The Level 2 is used as the competency element of the intermediate Improving Operational Performance apprenticeship framework.

 
These qualification are for learners of all ages who are starting out in an engineering role.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?
You'll cover things like:
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Pipe fitting
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Carrying out engineering activities.
You'll need to be in a suitable learning environment where you will have access to all the resources you need. Assessment is via a portfolio of evidence.

Which level is right for me?

Level 1
You are just starting out in your engineering career and require a broad range of competencies to enable safe progression into the workplace.

Level 2
You have some knowledge and basic skills in production or maintenance engineering - probably from a role where you work under supervision. You would like to increase your skills and perhaps progress on to more advanced qualifications.
What Careers Can This Lead To?
Achieving this qualification could help you progress in a variety of engineering roles, such as:
  • Electrical engineer
  • Engineering technician
  • Electronics assembler
  • Engineering maintenance fitter.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?
To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Level 1

Level 1 will suit you if you are just starting out in your engineering career and require a broad range of competencies to enable safe progression into the workplace.

You will need to complete three mandatory units:
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
  • Using and communicating technical information.
You also take a number of optional units, choosing from a broad range that includes:
  • Assembling mechanical components
  • Using lathes for turning operations
  • Assembling fluid power equipment
  • Cutting and shaping platework components
  • Wiring electrical equipment and circuits
  • Making sand moulds and cores for casting.

Level 2 is ideal if you have some knowledge and basic skills in production or maintenance engineering - probably from a role where you work under supervision. You would like to increase your skills and perhaps progress on to more advanced qualifications.

You'll need to complete three mandatory units:
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
  • Using and communicating technical information.
In addition, you complete a number of optional units from a range, including:
  • Producing mechanical engineering drawings using a CAD system
  • Forming and assembling pipework systems
  • Carrying out aircraft detail fitting activities
  • Preparing and proving CNC machine tool programs
  • Preparing and using industrial robots
  • Preparing and using manual metal arc welding equipment
  • Producing composite assemblies
  • Stripping and rebuilding motorsport vehicles (pre-competition)
  • General electrical and electronic engineering applications.
