What will apprentices learn?

Learners develop an understanding of how IT infrastructure, networks, communications systems and digital services support organisational operations and business objectives. Designed around the Information Communications Technician (ST0973) occupational standard, the apprenticeship develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to operate, support and improve technology services.
Apprentices learn how to:
  • Install, configure and maintain IT hardware, software and communications systems
  • Monitor the performance, availability and security of IT services and infrastructure
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve technical incidents and user issues
  • Provide effective technical support to internal and external customers
  • Support network, cloud and communication technologies to meet business requirements
  • Use industry tools and processes to manage service requests, incidents and system changes
  • Maintain data security, privacy and compliance with organisational and regulatory requirements
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of IT systems, services and user experience
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, suppliers and stakeholders to deliver reliable digital services
  • Apply professional standards and adapt to emerging technologies and changing business needs
The apprenticeship combines technical knowledge with practical workplace experience, enabling apprentices to develop the skills required to support modern digital environments and build careers in areas such as IT support, networking, infrastructure, cybersecurity and digital communications.

Assessment

Apprentices will typically spend 18 months on-programme, excluding the assessment period, working towards meeting the Occupational Standard for the Information Communications Technician (ST0973) apprenticeship, with required off-the-job training completed in accordance with the apprenticeship funding rules.
Employers and training providers should ensure that apprentices have access to appropriate workplace experience and development opportunities to gain and apply the required knowledge and skills for their chosen option:
  • Support Technician
  • Network Technician
  • Digital Communications Technician
This includes opportunities to install, configure, support, monitor and maintain IT systems, networks, communications technologies and digital services, as appropriate to the apprentice’s chosen option.
There are no prescribed points during the programme when assessment must take place. Apprentices may be assessed at an appropriate point during their apprenticeship, once they have developed the knowledge and skills required for the relevant assessment.
The City & Guilds apprenticeship assessment consists of the following two assessment components:
  • Professional Discussion
  • Portfolio of Evidence
The Professional Discussion provides apprentices with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through a structured discussion with an assessor.
For the Portfolio of Evidence, apprentices compile evidence from their workplace practice to demonstrate how they have applied the relevant knowledge and skills when carrying out occupational activities. The portfolio is internally assessed by the training provider and subject to external verification by City & Guilds.
The assessment covers the core assessment outcomes and the assessment outcomes for the apprentice’s chosen option. Apprentices must meet the requirements of both assessment components to achieve the apprenticeship assessment.
Any English and maths requirements must be completed in accordance with the apprenticeship funding rules that apply to the apprentice.
Main changes made
  • Replaced “learners” with “apprentices” to reflect the apprenticeship context.
  • Clarified that the typical 18-month duration excludes the assessment period.
  • Added the three occupational options.
  • Replaced the previous EPA methods with the agreed components: Professional Discussion and Portfolio of Evidence.
  • Clarified that the Portfolio is an assessment component in its own right, rather than evidence that merely underpins the Professional Discussion.
  • Removed references to gathering evidence solely to prepare for a traditional end-point assessment.
  • Clarified that both the core outcomes and the relevant option outcomes are assessed.
  • Reworded the English and maths statement so that it does not imply a separate EPA gateway requirement.
