Building Services Engineering

Supporting skills development across the sector through practical training in electrical, plumbing, heating and more

As the Building Services Engineering (BSE) industry moves towards a more sustainable future with new advanced installations and technologies, there has never been a better time for learners to kick-start their career or update their skills with industry-recognised qualifications, programmes and skills development solutions.

We work across key BSE sub-sectors including electrical installation, plumbing, heating and ventilation, gas engineering, refrigeration and air-conditioning, equipping our learners to install and service all things in the built environment safely.

With continuous professional development (CPD) learners can progress in their careers with updated knowledge of new regulations, legislation and technologies impacting the built environment.

The future of the skills landscape is changing

The qualification landscape is changing rapidly as the government sets out net zero targets and reforms to post-16 qualifications in England to support the move into skilled jobs. Providers, employers and learners who can adapt to these changes will be well-positioned to succeed.

bse sustainability thumbnailEmployers looking to recruit skilled professionals to support a net zero economy by 2050 are facing substantial challenges. With the shift to electric and hybrid vehicles and the need for energy-efficient indoor environments, our Green Skills and Sustainability qualifications are proving to be crucial in bridging the skills gap in this evolving sector.

Technical Advisor Robert Mallender

Robert Mallender

Technical advisor for BSE

With an impressive career history, Robert Mallender started as an apprentice carrying out the installation and maintenance of domestic and complex industrial, commercial, and mechanical services systems. Following his role as an installation engineer, Robert progressed into the role of Site Supervisor, managing the design and build contracts for a local authority.

The supervisory role encouraged Robert to return to further education and while completing his higher-level qualification in building services engineering, he was asked to complete some part-time teaching. The move to full-time lecturing followed a couple of years later with a career shift into management running a national assessment centre.

This role allowed Robert to transition into consultancy work for awarding organisations and provided in-depth knowledge of the structure of qualifications, delivery, support, quality assurance and how assessment materials are produced. The Technical Advisor role at City & Guilds then came as a seamless career progression.

Find out more about Robert on the Technical Advisor page or email directly on robert.mallender@cityandguilds.com.
