Want a career in Building Services Engineering but not sure about which area to go into? This one year introductory qualification gives learners a flavour of the skills involved in four different areas of building services engineering; plumbing, electrotechnical, heating and ventilating and refrigeration and air conditioning.

You'll find out what you enjoy, and then you can move onto a specialist qualification in either plumbing, electrotechnical, heating and ventilating or refrigeration and air-conditioning and hopefully eventually move onto a career.

This qualification is for people thinking about a career in buildings services engineering, in either plumbing, electrotechnical, heating and ventilating or refrigeration and air-conditioning.  You might be a young learner in full time education, or an adult.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

While completing this course, you'll cover basic skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Heating and ventilating
  • Refrigeration and air conditioning

You'll learn with your training provider, usually in a group. You'll be assessed on your practical skills and the knowledge you gain,  by completing practical tasks and online multiple choice tests.

Level 1
This level is ideal if you're just starting out and want a good basic understanding of the building services industry - enough to choose a career path and move on to your next qualification. You may be a young learner or an adult.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications don't lead directly to a job, but they prepare you to start a specialist qualification in your chosen area

After taking another qualification, you could choose to work as a :

  • Plumber
  • Electrician
  • Heating and ventilating engineer
  • Refrigeration or air conditioning engineer.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver this qualification you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners have the necessary skills and knowledge before embarking on this course.

Level 1

Level 1 is ideal if you're just starting out and want a good basic understanding of the building services industry - enough to choose a career path and move on to your next qualification. You may be a young learner or an adult.
To earn this qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units, including:

  • Introduction to the building services engineering sector
  • Electrical
  • Environmental awareness

These qualifications don't lead directly to a job, but they prepare you to start other qualifications.

After taking another qualification, you could choose to work as a :

  • Plumber
  • Electrician
  • Heating and ventilating engineer
  • Air conditioning engineer.

You can use the units from your Certificate or Diploma to get a head start on these NVQ Level 2 Diplomas:

  • Installing, Testing and Maintaining Air Conditioning Systems (6187-01)
  • Installing and Maintaining Refrigeration Systems (6187-02)
  • Heating & Ventilating - Industrial & Commercial Installation (6188-01)
  • Heating & Ventilating - Service and Maintenance (6188-02)
  • Heating & Ventilating - Ductwork Installation (6188-03)
  • Plumbing and Heating (6189-01)
  • Domestic Heating (6189-11).

You might also want to move on to these NVQ Diplomas ( but the units from your Certificate or Diploma don't count towards them):

  • Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance) Level 3 (2357-13)
  • Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings and Structures) Level 3 (2357-23)
