The City & Guilds TechBac® recognised as route to university

The City & Guilds TechBac® has been recognised as a clear route to university as UCAS awarded vital admissions points to the Level 3 Advanced qualifications that sit within this innovative study programme for 16-18 year olds.

Launched in five subject areas in September 2014, City & Guilds TechBac® was created to offer a genuine alternative to traditional academic routes such as GCSE and A-Level. Every young person who studies these full-time courses gains the skills needed to go onto a higher apprenticeship or into a job and crucially will now also be able to use their qualifications to go on to university, with students studying the higher level courses able to achieve the equivalent of three A*s at A-Level.

Kirstie Donnelly MBE - City & Guilds UK MD said: “We’re delighted that these new qualifications have been awarded UCAS points as this offers learners and their parents an alternative when choosing which subjects to study at school and college. The TechBac® not only offers choice but it has been designed to specifically prepare young people for the world of work giving students a real competitive edge because of the rich employment focussed learning experience it provides.”

The new technical qualifications which sit at the heart of TechBac® have been developed with employers to ensure learners have the sought after workplace skills to help fill the ever-increasing skills gap in the UK, setting them on the road to a great career.

All other vocational courses that I've seen, and most academic ones, ignore the fact that we have fundamentally changed the way we do business in this industry.”

The confirmation of UCAS points for these qualifications signifies a step change in the range of options available to young people in the UK and will help vocational and academic qualifications be viewed as equal by parents, learners, teachers and employers alike.

The TechBac® also addresses concerns raised by many employers that the education sector isn’t preparing young people for work. It builds attitudes and behaviours alongside experience to help learners in their future work, developing those much lauded ‘soft skills’ such as team work and digital literacy alongside their core learning to help them become valuable employees.

Unlike other similar courses in the marketplace, the TechBac® is also shaped with higher education in mind, including an extended project qualification which has been praised by universities as it prepares learners for independent working and degree level courses. 

During 2014 the TechBac® was offered at a select group of pioneer colleges across the country with students studying subjects from engineering through to childcare.

Chris Wood is the Vice Principal at Preston’s College which is a TechBac® Pioneer. He said: “The TechBac® is a qualification that recognises true skills development in a technical and vocational learning package that meets the needs of the labour market.  It is key to building the workforce of the future in a collaborative employer-education partnership.”
