IPPR report on upper secondary education launched

Today the IPPR released a report called 'Moving on up' which considers how to develop a strong and coherent upper secondary education system in the UK. Patrick Craven – City & Guilds Head of Learning, Assessment & Design Practice contributed to the report. He said:

‘The IPPR’s report released today makes the case for a well-defined upper-secondary system in England with greater flexibility, coherence and accountability in the system to meet the needs of our young people.

‘I was delighted to be asked to contribute to this report and the debate on this crucially important issue. Of course young people need core subject knowledge and strong literacy and numeracy skills, but they also need timely advice on the skills and competencies needed to progress into further and higher education, and excel in the world of work.

‘There needs to be better coordination between businesses and schools at a local level. To do this, we are calling on Government to give Local Enterprise Partnerships a statutory basis and be kept for at least the duration of the next Parliament.

‘At City & Guilds we believe that market information and the latest data on skills gaps should be used to shape the careers advice on offer so that young people understand which jobs are in demand. To make this a reality we need closer links between careers advice services in schools and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) who can give an accurate picture of the labour market.’
