Hair and beauty students in the UK can now access online training materials to develop their skills

City & Guilds and online hairdressing education site (MHD) have entered into an exclusive UK partnership to design and sell training resources supporting the teaching and learning of hairdressing, barbering and beauty qualifications. The partnership, which was launched at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapist (AHT) conference on 10 May, is designed to bring training for hair and beauty students into the 21st century digital world and ensure they are up to date on all the latest trends.

From 1 September 2014 the two companies will bring together their existing portfolios to offer innovative and high quality professional video-based resources online. The videos, which provide training on the latest techniques, qualification performance criteria and knowledge, are backed by key experts in the industry including Stacey Broughton and Tim Hartley. Accessible via computer, tablet and mobile phone, this means easy access to 507 videos, with 838 supporting PDFs, bringing the classroom into the salon for the first time.

The resources will also support teachers to engage learners effectively, enabling them to progress at their own individual pace. The technology is designed to make it easier for trainers to track individuals’ performances for full visibility of all students and classes – helping them to stretch and challenge learners to achieve their full potential.

The teaching material is aimed at learners undertaking NVQs, VRQs and SVQs from Levels 1 - 3 and also includes embedded Maths & English Functional Skills components to help learners develop the core employability skills needed by employers.

This partnership comes as the sector prepares for the new training standards, which will be introduced in May 2015, and will support the new vocational education reforms for the future of the hair and beauty industry. These videos will support all tutors and learners to meet these changes and help maintain high standards across the industry, setting the benchmark for excellent quality and professional practice.

The new tutor and learner resource packages will be available from 1 September 2014, with pre-orders taken from June.
