Electric Vehicle Charging Installations (2921)

Last Updated: 26 Mar 2024

As the UK strives towards becoming a net-zero economy by 2050, its’ Transport strategy is a key pillar in enabling a successful transition. The transport sector is one of the UK’s largest emitters of CO2 and a major source of air pollution in cities. Decarbonizing transport is therefore a key priority for the UK Government.

This priority is reflected across all levels of Government strategies to stimulate the electrification of UK vehicles from large fleets of public buses to delivery vans, HGVs and private cars. As of July 2022, there were over 520,000 battery-electric cars in the UK and in 2021-22 there was a 92% increase in electrical vehicle registrations on 2020. This figure is predicted to grow steadily.

As the number of battery-electric cars increases so does the need to rapidly expand the electrical vehicle charging (EV charging) infrastructure from circa 35,500 charge points across the UK network to 500,000 charge points by 2030.

The growth in electrical vehicle charging (EV charging) infrastructure presents a significant opportunity and the industry must ensure the workforce is skilled to install and maintain this infrastructure safely and efficiently.

About the qualifications:
We worked with employers and professional associations to design a new EV Charging industry standard, and a set of qualifications aimed at skilled electricians, installers and engineers wishing to upskill, to safely install and maintain Electric Vehicle charging points.

There are three qualifications available:

  • 2921-31 Design and installation of domestic and small commercial electric vehicle charging installations.
  • 2921-32 Design and Quality Assurance of Largescale electric vehicle charging installations.
  • 2921-33 Installation and maintenance of Largescale electric vehicle charging installations.

These have been approved by ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) allowing existing gold card members to add this new suite of qualifications onto their card to showcase their recognised ability to carry out EVC installation services across public and commercial sites.

We are issuing a digital credential to learners who have completed these qualifications.
