You'll learn the essentials of keeping an office running - handling the phones and mail, creating business documents and welcoming visitors. You can also choose units covering personal and social development or business administration.
These Award and Certificate in Business and Administration are for anyone interested in starting a career in office administration. You'll need access to work experience or to be working in the industry already. You don't need any prior qualifications.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

The qualification covers areas such as working in business and administration, creating business documents, making and receiving calls, handling mail and working and part of a group.

To gain one of these Business and Administration qualifications you'll learn with your training provider. You may learn in a group environment in a training centre or you may take this qualification as part of development at your workplace.

These qualifications are assessed at work or at a work experience site. You'll build a portfolio of evidence that shows you have the skills to do your job well. This evidence can come from on-the-job observation by the assessor, oral questioning, witness testimony or by work you've produced.

Level 1
You want to work in administrative support in an office, or you've just started working in this area. You'd like a solid base of knowledge and skills to help you succeed as an administrative assistant, receptionist or another related role.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Achieving this qualification can help you work in roles such as an administrative assistant or receptionist.

After taking the Award, you can move on to the Level 1 Certificate. You can use the units you completed for the Award to contribute to your Certificate.

If you'd like to advance in your career through additional training and work experience, you could consider:

  • Level 2 Certificate/Diploma in Business and Administration (4413)
  • Level 2 NVQ in Business and Administration (4404).

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

These business and administration qualifications can be delivered either at a learner's workplace or in your centre. Those learning in the centre will need access to work experience.

You'll assess learners using a portfolio of work-based evidence. This evidence can come from observation, evaluating work products, oral questioning or witness testimony.

While the Assessor/Verifier (A/V) units are valued as qualifications for centre staff, they are not currently a requirement for the qualifications. 

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.

Level 1

This will suit you if you want to work in administrative support in an office, or you've just started working in this area. You'd like a solid base of knowledge and skills to help you succeed as an administrative assistant, receptionist or another related role.

There are two sizes of qualification at this level.

Level 1 Award in Business and Administration

You complete enough units to give you at least seven credits. Units include:

  • Making and receiving calls
  • Managing diary systems
  • Receiving visitors in a business environment.

Level 1 Certificate in Business and Administration

You complete enough units to give you at least 13 credits. The range of units includes:

  • Creating business documents
  • Maintaining customer relations in a business environment
  • Collecting and storing information.
