These qualifications cover all aspects of Gas and Water network construction. They were designed by industry and cover technical skills in areas such as excavating, electrofusion welding, operating tools and machinery and installation, while maintaining safety standards.
 
All level 2 qualifications form part of the Energy & Utility Skills apprenticeship frameworks
These are for network operatives and engineers already employed on the gas and water distribution networks, either directly with an asset owner or through an outsourced operations company

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?
You can choose the qualification that includes the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed, such as: 

  • Locate and avoid supply apparatus
  • excavating holes and trenches in ground and pavement structures
  • operating powered tools
  • electrofusion and butt fusion welding
  • assembling components to meet specifications for network construction operations.
 
You will learn mainly on the job in the work environment.

Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include practical tasks and oral questioning.

Which level is right for me?

Level 1 - You are working under supervision and possibly just starting out in, or are very new to, network construction.
Level 2 - You are working in network construction and have developed some knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?
To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train suitably experienced internal members of staff or recruit specially.
 
You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

All learners must be network operatives employed on distribution networks, either directly with an asset owner or through an outsourced operations company.

Centres currently offering the Level 1-3 NVQ in Gas Network Operations (6029) have automatic approval to offer the Gas pathways of these qualifications. Full approval is required for 6028 Networks Operations Water.

The Gas qualifications are combined knowledge and competence. Question banks to cover the knowledge requirements can found in assessment materials.

Level 1

Level 1 will suit you if you are just starting out in, or are very new to, network construction.

This level has Gas and Water pathways and comprises mandatory and a range of optional units, including:

  • Assist in locating and avoiding supply apparatus and sub structures
  • Working under supervision, excavate holes and trenches in ground and pavement structures
  • Working under supervision, assemble components to meet specifications for network construction operations
  • Assist in preparing resources and signing and guarding the area for site works.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress as a network construction operative involved in main laying and service laying.

You might also need to take a New Roads and Streetworks qualification (6156). This is a requirement to work on the highway.

Level 2 is ideal if you are working in network construction and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

This level has Gas and Water pathways and comprises mandatory and a range of optional units, including:
  • Maintain a safe and secure working environment in utilities network construction
  • Locate and avoid supply apparatus for utilities network construction
  • Install or replace external gas service risers
  • Conduct specified testing of gas networks associated with leakage location
  • Disconnection of gas meters.
