Global chef qualification launched

The first internationally recognised on the job qualification has been launched for chefs and cooks worldwide

The World Association of Chefs (WACS), a global network representing over 10 million professional chefs, has launched the first global culinary certification scheme. The scheme, delivered in partnership with City & Guilds, provides access to a qualification that can be completed by candidates while they work in the industry.

‘We see learning in the workplace as an essential part of improving industry standards,’ says John Clancy, Chairman of the WACS Education Committee. ‘There is hardly anything available for chefs and cooks who are busy working in the industry and who may not have the time to go back to formal education or never had the opportunity to obtain a qualification.’

WACS has been working with City & Guilds for nearly three years to create the nine certification levels that make up the scheme, which opened for applications on 1 June. The launch took place at Asia’s largest food and hospitality trade show, HOFEX. ‘This is the most important day in the history of WACS,’ says Gissur Gudmundsson, President of WACS. ‘For the first time ever, cooks and chefs operating at all levels within the industry are able to seek international recognition for the skills, experience and knowledge they have gained while working.’ 

As well as targeting cooks, the scheme also covers educators in the culinary sector ‘whose work underpins the culinary talent of the future’, says Gudmundsson. The qualification scheme uses technology to process applications received from anywhere in the world, making it truly global as well as accessible and affordable for people working in the sector.

‘We have been absolutely delighted by the feedback from the industry on the launch day and since,’ says Gudmundsson. ‘Employers welcome the fact that individuals can take the initiative and get their skills recognised as it demonstrates passion, commitment and a desire to continuously improve. Many of the employers we have spoken to are interested in exploring how the scheme can be incorporated into their staff training and development – which is exactly where we are hoping we can make the biggest difference.’
